Your Pontoon Tubes Are Telling You Something
If you have pulled your pontoon out of Lake Norman this year and noticed the tubes look worse than usual, you are not imagining it. The 2026 drought has kept water levels three to four feet below normal since spring, and that means aluminum that normally sits below the waterline has been baking in the sun for months. The result is oxidation — that chalky white film that makes your tubes look ten years older than they are.
I see this on every other pontoon I work on right now. Owners come back from a season at Crown Harbor or Safe Harbor, look at the tubes, and assume the boat is done. Most of the time, it is not even close. But the fix depends on what is actually happening to the aluminum, and that is where most people get it wrong.
Oxidation vs. Pitting — Two Different Problems
Oxidation is surface-level. It is a layer of aluminum oxide that forms when the metal reacts with air and moisture. It looks terrible — dull, chalky, sometimes streaky — but it has not damaged the structural integrity of your tubes. This is what I restore on most Lake Norman pontoons.
Pitting is different. That is when corrosion has actually eaten into the aluminum, leaving tiny craters in the surface. You can feel them with your fingertip. Once aluminum is pitted, no amount of polishing fills those holes back in. I can improve the appearance, but the texture stays. If the pitting is deep enough to compromise wall thickness, that is a conversation with a marine welder, not a detailer.
The good news is that most pontoons on Lake Norman have oxidation, not pitting. Freshwater lakes are far kinder to aluminum than saltwater. The bad news is that if you ignore oxidation long enough, it opens the door to pitting down the road.
What Aluminum Brightener Actually Does
Aluminum brightener is an acid-based cleaner that dissolves oxidation on contact. It is the first step in any pontoon tube restoration, and it is where most DIY attempts go sideways. The two mistakes I see constantly are using the wrong product and leaving it on too long.
Muriatic acid is the biggest offender. Boat owners grab it because it is cheap and available at any hardware store. It will strip oxidation, no question. But it also etches the aluminum underneath, leaving a rough, streaky surface that oxidizes faster than before. I have worked on pontoons where someone hit the tubes with muriatic acid and turned a two-hour job into an eight-hour job because now I am correcting the acid damage on top of the original oxidation.
The right aluminum brightener is formulated specifically for marine aluminum. You apply it in sections, scrub with a medium-bristle brush, and rinse within the product dwell time. On a 24-foot tritoon, this step alone takes 45 minutes to an hour done properly.
The Restoration Process Step by Step
After the brightener does its job, the real work starts. Here is what a full pontoon tube restoration looks like when I do it at your dock or marina:
- Rinse and assess. After brightener, I rinse everything and inspect the bare aluminum under good light. This is where I identify pitting, electrolysis damage, or any spots that need extra attention.
- Compound. I use a marine-grade aluminum compound with a rotary polisher. This removes the remaining oxidation layer and any light surface scratches. The tubes start showing actual metal shine at this stage.
- Polish. A finer aluminum polish smooths the surface and brings up the reflective finish. On tubes that were heavily oxidized, the difference between the compounded section and the polished section is dramatic.
- Seal. This is the step most people skip, and it is the reason tubes re-oxidize within weeks. A marine aluminum sealant bonds to the surface and blocks air and moisture from reaching the metal. A good sealant lasts six to twelve months on Lake Norman depending on whether your boat sits in a covered or open slip.
What About the Waterline Ring?
That dark ring where the water level sits is a combination of algae, mineral deposits, and oxidation. With Lake Norman water levels fluctuating this year, some pontoons have two or three visible lines on their tubes. The brightener handles most of it, but stubborn mineral deposits sometimes need a clay bar treatment before compounding. It adds time, but it is the only way to get a clean result without scratching.
When DIY Makes Sense and When It Does Not
If your pontoon tubes have light, even oxidation and you are comfortable with a rotary polisher, a DIY restoration is doable. Buy a quality marine aluminum brightener, a cutting compound made for aluminum, a finishing polish, and a sealant. Budget a full day for a standard pontoon.
Call a professional when you see uneven oxidation, pitting, dark staining that does not respond to brightener, or electrolysis marks near through-hull fittings. These conditions require more aggressive correction and the judgment to know when to stop before you thin the aluminum. I use a gloss meter to track progress — if the numbers stop climbing, the surface is as good as it is going to get, and pushing further just removes material for no gain.
Fall Is the Right Time for This
September through October is ideal for pontoon tube work on Lake Norman. The summer UV damage is done, the drought has made more tube surface accessible than usual, and you are ahead of winter storage. A pontoon that goes into storage with sealed, restored tubes comes out next spring looking almost as good as the day you pulled it.
