Boat Detailing in Catawba NC — Back Coves of Lake Norman

The Back Coves Nobody Talks About

Catawba sits on the northwest side of Lake Norman, and if you keep your boat over here, you already know — it is quieter, the coves are deeper, and nobody is fighting for dock space on a Saturday morning. Long Island Marina, the private docks off Catawba Springs Road, the back channels near Hudson Chapel — this is where the serious boaters live.

But quiet water does not mean clean boats. The same UV, pollen, and mineral deposits hitting the Cornelius side are hitting your hull over here. And with July 4th one week out, this is the stretch where every boat on the lake is about to see peak traffic. If your gel coat is chalky or your waterline ring is visible from the dock, now is the time to deal with it.

Why Catawba Boats Need the Same Attention

I have been detailing boats on Lake Norman for over 10 years, and the Catawba side has its own quirks. The back coves hold more debris — leaf tannin stains, pollen buildup under bimini tops, and algae lines that form faster in shallower, calmer water. Private docks without lifts mean the hull sits in the water full-time, and that waterline oxidation band gets wider every month.

This summer has been especially rough. Lake levels are still running 2 to 3 feet below normal from last year's drought carryover, which means more hull surface is exposed to UV than usual. That exposed strip between the old waterline and the current one has been baking since March. By now, you are looking at chalky oxidation that will not come off with a wash.

What a Full Detail Looks Like at Your Dock in Catawba

AJW Detailing is 100% mobile. I bring everything to your dock — generator, polisher, marine-grade products, water supply. No need to haul your boat anywhere. Whether you are at Long Island Marina, a private dock off Hwy 150, or tucked into one of the coves near Terrell, I come to you.

A full exterior detail on a boat in Catawba typically includes:

  • Hull wash and decontamination — removing waterline ring, algae staining, and mineral deposits
  • Oxidation correction — compound and polish to bring chalky gel coat back to gloss
  • Topside polish and sealant or ceramic coating application
  • Vinyl and upholstery cleaning — UV protectant applied to prevent cracking
  • Metal brightening on pontoon tubes or trim (aluminum brightener only — never on fiberglass)
  • Glass and isinglass cleaning for enclosures and windshields

If the oxidation is severe — and after this drought, I am seeing a lot of it on boats that sat uncovered — we may need to wet sand before compounding. That adds time, but it is the only way to get a hull back to the 90s on the gloss meter when it has dropped into the 40s or lower.

Ceramic Coating for Catawba County Boat Owners

If you are keeping your boat at a private dock on the Catawba side without a covered slip, ceramic coating is worth a serious look. Glidecoat Pro is what I use — I am certified and I have coated over 1,200 boats on this lake. It will not stop oxidation entirely, but it slows it down dramatically and makes pollen, bird droppings, and water spots rinse off instead of bonding to the gel coat.

The prep matters more than the product. Before any ceramic goes on, the surface has to be corrected to at least the high 80s on the gloss meter. If someone tells you they can coat a boat without polishing it first, walk away. The coating locks in whatever is underneath — good or bad.

Is It Worth It on an Older Boat?

Honest answer: it depends. If your gel coat is thin or has been repainted, ceramic coating may not bond properly. I will tell you that upfront. For most fiberglass boats with original gel coat in decent condition, the answer is yes — especially out here where covered slips are rare and the UV exposure is relentless from April through September.

Serving the Whole Northwest Corner of Lake Norman

Catawba, Terrell, Sherrills Ford, the Hwy 150 corridor — this whole stretch is part of my regular service area. I detail boats at Long Island Marina, private docks along Catawba Springs Road, and anywhere accessible by road on the Lincoln County side. If I can get my truck and trailer to your dock, I can detail your boat.

July 4th is next Saturday, and it is the biggest show day on the lake after Black Boat Weekend. If your boat has not been touched since spring, a full detail now means you are showing up to the holiday looking right — not explaining why your hull looks like it has not been washed since October.

Call or text me at (704) 594-3948 to get on the schedule before the holiday rush fills up. I will come to your dock in Catawba and give you an honest assessment of what your boat needs — no upsell, just what the gel coat and the gloss meter tell me.
