Cornelius Sits at the Heart of Lake Norman — And That's Where We Work

If you keep your boat anywhere between Crown Harbor and Jetton Park, you already know what the north end of Lake Norman does to gel coat. The peninsula coves on this stretch face south and west, which means your boat catches full afternoon sun from April through September. That UV exposure is the single biggest reason boats on this end of the lake oxidize faster than owners expect.

I'm Alex Adams, owner of AJW Detailing. We're based right here in Cornelius off Coachmans Trace, and we've been detailing boats on the north end for over ten years. We come directly to your dock — no hauling, no waiting, no marina appointment. That's what dock-to-dock means. We show up with everything we need and detail your boat right where it sits.

What We're Seeing on Cornelius Boats Right Now

The drought hasn't let up. Lake Norman is still sitting more than two feet below its target level as of mid-May, and Duke Energy's Stage 1 advisory is still active. That means the hull surface that normally stays under the waterline has been baking in the sun for months. We're pulling boats at Crown Harbor right now with oxidation bands three to four inches wider than normal.

On top of that, pollen season peaked hard this year. If your boat has been sitting uncovered in a slip, the deck probably has a yellow-green film that's been cooking into the gel coat every sunny afternoon. That film isn't just sitting on the surface — the UV fuses it into the clear coat if it stays too long. A regular wash won't touch it once that happens.

Where We Work Around Cornelius

We service boats docked at Crown Harbor Marina, the slips near Jetton Park, private docks along Peninsula Club Drive, and the coves off Catawba Avenue heading toward Davidson. If you're anywhere in the 28031 zip code with dock access, we can get to you.

Cornelius is our home turf. Most mornings we're already on this side of the lake before heading south toward Mooresville or across to Denver. That means scheduling is easier here than anywhere else we serve, and we can usually get you on the calendar within the week.

What a Full Boat Detail Looks Like at the Dock

Every detail starts with a full assessment. We walk the boat stem to stern and check the gel coat condition, vinyl, canvas, and waterline. Then we build the plan around what the boat actually needs — not a menu of packages.

For most Cornelius boats right now, we're doing a three-step gel coat correction. That's a wash and decontamination, compound to cut through the oxidation, and polish to bring the gloss back up. We check the result with a gloss meter — we're targeting the 90s to 100 range, which is better than factory on most boats.

Interior gets the same attention. Vinyl cleaning with marine-grade conditioner, carpet extraction if the boat has it, and a full wipedown of every hard surface. If there's mold in the stitching or under seat cushions — and after this winter, there usually is — we treat it before it spreads.

Ceramic Coating for Boats on the North End

After correction is the best time to coat. We're Glidecoat Pro Certified applicators, and we've coated over 1,200 boats on Lake Norman. Ceramic bonds to clean, corrected gel coat and gives you two to three years of UV protection, water beading, and easier washdowns between details.

Here's where I'll be honest with you. If your boat lives in a covered slip at Crown Harbor and you wash it every couple weeks, you might not need ceramic right now. A good wax after correction will hold you through the season. But if your boat sits in an open slip catching full sun, ceramic is the only thing that's going to keep this oxidation from coming right back by August.

We do both. We'll tell you which one makes sense for your boat based on what we see when we get there.

Why Cornelius Boat Owners Choose Dock-to-Dock

The alternative is hauling your boat to a shop, leaving it for a few days, and hauling it back. That's two launch fees, fuel, and time you're not on the water. With our mobile setup, we bring the generator, polishers, compounds, marine-grade products, and water to your dock. You don't move the boat. You don't coordinate with the marina. You don't lose a weekend.

We run 10 to 12 crew members across Lake Norman, so we can handle everything from a single pontoon wash to a full ceramic coating job on a 35-foot cabin cruiser. If you've got multiple boats at the same dock, we'll knock them out the same day.

Book Before Memorial Day Slots Fill

Memorial Day is May 25th. That's 11 days out. We're already booking up for pre-holiday details, and the north end of the lake always fills first because it's where we start each day. If your boat hasn't been touched since last fall, now is the time.

Call or text us at (704) 594-3948 to get on the schedule. We'll come to your dock in Cornelius, assess your boat, and give you a straight answer on what it needs.
