Dock Rash Is the Number One Thing I See on Lake Norman Boats

I have been detailing boats on Lake Norman for over ten years, and if there is one thing I see more than anything else, it is dock rash. Those scuffs and scratches along the hull where your boat has been rubbing against the dock, the pilings, or even your fenders. Most boat owners do not think much about it until they notice a whole section of gel coat that has gone from glossy white to dull and scratched.

Dock rash happens because of repeated contact, not a single hit. Wind shifts, wake from passing boats, slack dock lines, and changing water levels all push your hull against whatever is next to it. On Lake Norman, with the drought keeping water levels two to three feet below normal, boats are sitting differently in their slips and dock rash has been worse this season.

What Gel Coat Scratches Actually Look Like Up Close

Not all scratches are the same, and knowing what you are looking at determines whether compound alone will fix it or whether you need wet sanding or gel coat fill work.

Surface scuffs are the lightest category. Rubber transfer from fenders, paint transfer from dock hardware, or light haze from repeated contact. Run your fingernail across it. If you cannot feel a groove, it is surface-level and will come out with a polishing compound and a dual-action polisher in one pass.

Light scratches go slightly deeper. You can feel them with your fingernail, but they have not gone through the gel coat layer. This is your standard dock rash — a cluster of parallel lines running along the waterline or mid-hull where the boat sits against the dock. These need a heavy-cut compound step before the finishing polish.

Deep scratches are the ones that have gone through or nearly through the gel coat. Gel coat on most fiberglass boats is roughly one thirty-second of an inch thick — about the thickness of a credit card. If a scratch has exposed the laminate underneath, you will see it as a lighter or different-colored line. That scratch needs to be filled with gel coat repair material before any compounding happens. Trying to compound out a deep scratch just thins the surrounding gel coat and makes things worse.

The Repair Process I Use — Step by Step

When I pull up to a boat at Crown Harbor or Safe Harbor and the owner tells me the gel coat looks rough, I start with my gloss meter. That gives me a baseline number. I typically see readings in the 40s or 50s on a hull with significant dock rash, compared to readings in the 90s on a freshly corrected surface. That number tells me exactly how much work the gel coat needs.

For surface scuffs, I go straight to a medium-cut compound on a foam pad. One pass, maybe two, and the scuff is gone. A polish after that brings the gloss up, and the meter reading usually jumps 30 to 40 points.

For standard dock rash with light to moderate scratches, the process starts with wet sanding. I begin at 1000 grit, sometimes 800 if the scratches are deeper, and work up through 1500, 2000, and sometimes 3000 grit. Each step removes the sanding marks from the previous grit. After the final sand, the surface looks hazy — that is completely normal. Then I hit it with a heavy-cut compound, followed by a medium polish, and finish with a fine polish. The gel coat comes back to readings in the 90s on the gloss meter every time, as long as there is enough thickness to work with.

For deep scratches that have gone through the gel coat, I am honest with customers. That is a gel coat repair job, not just a detailing job. It requires matching the gel coat color, filling the scratch, curing it, then sanding and polishing the repair flush with the surrounding surface. I make sure the owner knows what they are getting into before I start.

Why Dock Rash Has Been Worse This Season

The drought on Lake Norman has changed things. With water levels running two to three feet below normal, boats are sitting lower relative to their docks and pilings. Fenders positioned correctly at normal pool level are now hitting in different spots. I have been seeing dock rash higher on topsides, along rub rails, and even on swim platforms that are now closer to dock height.

Lower water also means more exposed hull surface baking in the sun. UV-degraded gel coat scratches easier than healthy gel coat. You get a double hit — more contact from the changed water level, plus weaker gel coat from increased UV exposure on surfaces that are normally below the waterline.

Prevention Costs Less Than Correction

Proper fender placement prevents most dock rash. Use one fender for every ten feet of boat length. Position them at the widest point of the hull, not just where it is convenient to hang them. Check your dock lines after any significant weather — slack lines let the boat drift and make contact.

Ceramic coating helps too. It will not prevent a scratch from a hard impact, but it creates a harder, slicker surface that resists the light abrasion from routine dock contact. I have coated over 1,200 boats on Lake Norman with Glidecoat Pro, and the ones that come back for annual maintenance have noticeably less dock rash than the uncoated boats sitting in the same marina.

When to Call Instead of Doing It Yourself

If you have a few isolated scuffs, a bottle of rubbing compound and some elbow grease will handle it. But if you are looking at a ten-foot stretch of dock rash, or your gel coat is already showing oxidation, you need a professional correction. Wet sanding without knowing the gel coat thickness risks burning through to the laminate, and at that point you are looking at a much more expensive repair.
