Getting Your Lake Norman Boat Ready Before Memorial Day

What a Winter in the Water Does to Your Boat's Gel Coat

Most Lake Norman boats have been sitting since October. If yours was in the water — on a lift, in a slip, or docked — it has a winter's worth of buildup right now. Algae ring at the waterline. Green or black film on the hull bottom. Oxidation starting to dull the gel coat. And pollen already settling on top of all of it.

Memorial Day is 18 days away.

That algae isn't just cosmetic. Left on long enough, it etches into the gel coat. The slightly acidic waste from algae colonies starts breaking down the surface layer, which accelerates oxidation. By the time you scrub it off, you're often looking at dull, chalky gel coat underneath that needs compounding to bring back. A pressure washer alone won't get it — you need the right chemicals, the right sequence, and enough mechanical action to remove the biofilm without damaging the surface underneath.

The Algae Line Is Worse This Year

Lake Norman is currently running 2 to 3 feet lower than it was this time last year. Duke Energy issued a Stage 1 drought advisory for the Catawba-Wateree River Basin, and boat ramps at Blythe Landing are closed because the water has receded too far for safe launching.

What that means for your boat: more hull has been sitting exposed above the waterline all spring, baking in UV without any water protection. On top of that, the low water shifted where the algae line actually sits — which means some boats have a wider oxidation band than normal right at the old waterline mark.

If your boat has been in the water since last fall, check the full waterline before Memorial Day weekend. The damage is usually wider than it looks from the dock.

Two Ways to Get It Done Before May 25

We run a dock-to-dock mobile operation. There are two ways to get your boat cleaned up before the holiday weekend.

Path A — Meet us at the marina during your haul-out

A lot of Lake Norman boat owners are getting their running gear serviced before summer — props cleaned, drives inspected, lower unit work done. While the boat is already hauled out and sitting on the hard, we pull up and do the full detail at the same time. Hull scrub, algae removal, exterior compound and polish, interior detail, vinyl treatment — everything done while it's out of the water. You handle the mechanical appointment, we handle the detail. One trip, both done.

Path B — We come to your dock

If you're not hauling out, we come to you. Your slip at Crown Harbor, Safe Harbor, River City Marina, Holiday Harbor, or your private dock anywhere around the lake. We show up with everything we need. No trailering, no lost Saturday morning driving across the county. You stay on your schedule — we work around it.

What a Full Pre-Season Detail Actually Covers

A full detail isn't a rinse and a wipe-down. Here's what we do:

  • Hull exterior wash, decontamination, and compounding where oxidation has dulled the gel coat

  • Algae and waterline ring removal — chemical treatment followed by hand scrubbing

  • Pontoon tube cleaning on aluminum pontoons (aluminum brightener, separate process from fiberglass)

  • Interior deep clean — carpet, vinyl, upholstery, all compartments, bilge area

  • Canvas and bimini top cleaning with UV treatment

  • Isinglass polishing and conditioning

  • Stainless steel polishing on rails and cleats

  • Final exterior sealant or wax application

If you want to go further, we can add a Glidecoat ceramic coating while the boat is already prepped and clean. That's a permanent protective layer that blocks UV and makes algae and pollen slide off instead of sticking. We measure gloss with a meter before and after — we don't guess at the result.

Marinas and Areas We Serve Around Lake Norman

We work the full lake. On the Mecklenburg side: Cornelius, Huntersville, and Davidson — Crown Harbor, Jetton Park docks, and the peninsula coves. On the Iredell side: Mooresville and Troutman — Safe Harbor, River City Marina, and the dock-heavy neighborhoods off Brawley School Road. On the Lincoln County side: Denver and Sherrills Ford — Holiday Harbor and the Lake Norman Marina on Highway 150.

If your boat is on Lake Norman, we can get to it.

Slots Are Filling — Here's How to Book

The week before Memorial Day is the busiest window of the year and the schedule closes fast. Call or text us at {{custom_values.company_phone_functional}} to get on the schedule. Tell us where the boat is, what shape it's in, and whether you're planning a haul-out. We'll get you a quote and lock in a date before May 25.
