Your Jet Ski Took a Beating This Summer — Now What?

If you ran a jet ski on Lake Norman this summer, it shows. Between the UV exposure from April through September, the low water levels kicking up sediment every time you launched from Blythe Landing or Holiday Harbor, and the general wear from a full season of use — your PWC is carrying months of damage on every surface.

I've been detailing boats and watercraft on Lake Norman for over 10 years, and every fall I see the same thing: jet ski owners pull their Sea-Doo or Yamaha WaveRunner out of the water, throw a cover on it, and park it in the garage until April. Six months later they pull that cover off and wonder why the gel coat looks chalky, the vinyl seats are cracked, and there's mold growing in every crevice.

That damage didn't happen over winter. It was already there when the cover went on. Winter just made it permanent.

What a Summer on Lake Norman Does to Your PWC

Jet skis sit lower in the water than boats, and they take spray from every angle. That means more direct UV on the hull, more mineral deposits from lake water drying on surfaces, and more grime building up in places you can't easily reach. This summer was worse than usual — Lake Norman's water levels stayed 2 to 3 feet below normal through most of the season, which meant shallower launches, more bottom contact, and more sediment stirred up around the hull.

The gel coat on most PWCs is thinner than what you find on a full-size boat. That means oxidation sets in faster, water spots etch deeper, and scratches from dock rash or trailer loading show up more. If you've noticed your jet ski looking faded or rough to the touch, that's oxidation — and it doesn't stop just because you park it in the garage.

Vinyl and Interior Damage

The seat and interior surfaces take the worst of it. Sunscreen, body oils, lake water, and UV exposure all break down vinyl over a single season. If that residue stays on the surface under a cover through winter, you're looking at permanent staining, cracking, and in some cases mold growth that's almost impossible to fully remove by spring.

A proper end-of-season jet ski detail isn't a wash and wax. Here's what I do on every PWC that comes through before winter storage:

• Full exterior decontamination — hand wash, clay bar to pull embedded mineral deposits and oxidation from the gel coat, iron remover on stubborn water spots
• Gel coat polish and protection — machine polish to restore gloss, followed by a marine-grade sealant or wax that holds through six months of storage
• Vinyl deep clean and UV protectant — marine vinyl cleaner to strip sunscreen and body oil buildup, then a UV-blocking conditioner that keeps seats from cracking over winter
• Hull and intake grate cleaning — removing algae, mineral buildup, and debris from the jet intake, hull bottom, and trailer bunks
• Storage prep — all surfaces dried and treated so nothing traps moisture under the cover

When Ceramic Coating Makes Sense on a Jet Ski

If you're running a newer PWC or you just invested in gel coat correction, ceramic coating is worth the conversation. Ceramic creates a hydrophobic barrier that repels water, UV, and contaminants at the molecular level — and on a jet ski, that means less oxidation, easier cleaning, and a surface that still looks sharp after a full season of hard use.

The honest answer: ceramic coating makes the most sense on PWCs that are stored outside, run frequently, or have dark-colored hulls that show oxidation and swirl marks faster. If you garage your jet ski and only run it a few weekends a year, a quality marine sealant after polishing will get you through just fine.

Book Before the Cover Goes On

September and early October is the window. Once that cover goes on a dirty jet ski, you're locking in six months of damage. The detail takes a few hours, and I can usually get you scheduled within a week during fall.
