I'm Alex Adams, owner of AJW Detailing, and I've been running mobile detailing out of Cornelius for over ten years. What RV Detailing Actually Covers
A real RV detail isn't a quick rinse with a garden hose. Here's what a full exterior and interior service looks like when we show up:
On the outside, we start with a full wash using RV-safe soap — never dish detergent, which strips any existing wax or sealant. The front cap and bumper get a dedicated bug removal pass because baked-on insects etch into gel coat and fiberglass if you leave them. We clay bar the sides to pull embedded contaminants, then hand-polish any oxidation. If the gel coat has gone chalky — and on a rig that's been sitting in a Mooresville storage lot all spring, it usually has — we compound it back to gloss before sealing.
The roof gets its own treatment. Fiberglass roofs oxidize just like boat hulls. Rubber roofs (EPDM or TPO) need a different approach — specialized cleaners that won't damage the membrane, followed by UV protectant. We clean awnings, slide-out seals, and all exterior trim.
Inside, we deep clean upholstery, vacuum every surface including slide-out tracks and overhead cabinets, wipe down all hard surfaces, and treat vinyl and leather with UV-rated conditioner. If there's mildew from sitting closed up in NC humidity, we address that too.

Nobody wants to drive a 30-foot travel trailer across town to a detail shop. Half the shops around here don't even have bay doors tall enough for a Class A motorhome. Summer Travel Does Real Damage to Your RV's Finish
North Carolina summers are brutal on any vehicle, but RVs take it worse because of the surface area exposed to UV. The flat sides and roof absorb more sun per square foot than any car or boat. Add the fact that most RVs sit in open storage between trips — no shade, no cover — and you're looking at accelerated oxidation every week the rig bakes in 95-degree heat.
Road trips compound the problem. Interstate bugs hit at 70 mph and the acidic residue starts etching within 48 hours. Tar and road film work into the gel coat. Tree sap from campground parking spots bonds to the roof and sidewalls. The longer you wait to address it, the harder — and more expensive — the correction becomes.
Ceramic Coating for RVs — When It's Worth It
If you travel more than a few weekends per season, ceramic coating pays for itself in reduced maintenance. A Glidecoat Pro application on an RV exterior means bugs, sap, and road grime wash off with a rinse instead of requiring a full decontamination pass every time you return from a trip.
I won't tell you every RV needs ceramic coating. If you use your camper twice a year and store it covered, a good sealant and wax is fine. But for the folks running trips out of Lake Norman every other weekend from May through October — and there are a lot of you — ceramic coating cuts your cleaning time in half and keeps the gel coat from degrading between professional details.
Common RV Issues We See Around Lake Norman
Oxidized front caps and sidewalls from open storage in Denver and Mooresville. Mildew on awning fabric from NC humidity. Black streaks running down from the roof edge — that's a combination of dirt, tree debris, and oxidized rubber sealant washing down with rain. Faded vinyl graphics. Chalky gel coat on fiberglass roofs. Slide-out seals packed with dirt and leaves. We see all of it, and most of it is correctable with the right products and technique.
