What's Included in a Full Boat Detail on Lake Norman

Memorial Day Just Passed — Now You Can See Everything Winter Did

Memorial Day weekend is behind us, and Lake Norman is in full-send mode. Boats are coming off lifts, launching from Blythe Landing, and sliding into slips at Crown Harbor and Safe Harbor for the first time since October. Every one of them is showing what six months of sitting did to the gel coat, the vinyl, and the waterline.

I get the same question every week this time of year: what is included in a full boat detail on Lake Norman? Fair question — the answer depends on who you ask. Some detailers wash the hull, hit the seats with ArmorAll, and call it done. That is not what I do. Here is what a full boat detail actually looks like when AJW Detailing shows up at your dock.

Gel Coat Wash, Decontamination, and Oxidation Check

Every full detail starts with a pH-neutral marine wash that lifts waterline grime, pollen residue, and algae staining without stripping existing wax or sealant. After the wash I do a hands-on inspection of the gel coat looking for oxidation — that chalky white haze that builds up when UV breaks down the resin layer.

This year oxidation is worse than usual because the lake has been two to three feet below normal. More hull surface has been exposed to direct sun for months. If oxidation is present, the gel coat gets a compound and polish sequence. On heavier cases I wet sand with 1500 or 2000 grit first, then step through compound and polish. I measure the result with a gloss meter — targeting readings in the 90s to 100 range. I do not guess whether the finish looks good enough.

Hull Polishing and Waterline Scrub

The waterline is its own project. That brown or green ring is a combination of tannins, mineral deposits, and algae. It does not come off with a wash. I use a dedicated waterline cleaner and agitate by hand, then follow with compound if the staining has etched into the gel coat.

On pontoon boats the aluminum tubes get a separate treatment with an aluminum brightener formulated specifically for pontoon tubes — never used on fiberglass or painted surfaces. It dissolves the oxidation layer and brings back that factory silver finish. This is the step most detailers skip because it is time-intensive and requires a completely different product set.

Vinyl Cleaning and Conditioning

Every seat, bolster, and cushion gets cleaned with a marine-grade vinyl cleaner. I am removing sunscreen residue, mildew staining, body oils, and ground-in dirt in seams and stitching. Mold and mildew are common on boats that sat all winter with covers trapping moisture — especially around River City Marina and the back side of Jetton Park where humidity stays high.

After cleaning, every vinyl surface gets a UV-protectant conditioner. Not ArmorAll — a marine-specific conditioner that absorbs into the vinyl rather than sitting on top as a greasy film. The goal is preventing cracking and fading through the NC summer UV season running April through September.

Interior Deep Clean — Carpet, Bilge, and Compartments

Full detail means full interior. I pull up floor panels, open every storage compartment, and clean areas most owners forget exist. The bilge gets degreased and flushed. Carpet gets hot water extracted to pull out salt, sand, and lake water that settled in over the season.

Compartments under seats and in the bow get wiped down, dried, and treated for mildew. If you have ever opened a bow storage compartment in May and gotten hit with that musty smell, you know what I am talking about. That means mold spores are active and will spread to your vinyl and canvas if you do not address them early.

Canvas, Bimini, and Isinglass

Your bimini top, mooring cover, and canvas enclosures collect pollen, bird droppings, tree sap, and mildew. I clean canvas with a marine canvas cleaner and retreat it with a water repellent. Isinglass — the clear vinyl windows in your enclosure — gets cleaned with a dedicated isinglass cleaner and polish. Regular glass cleaner will cloud isinglass permanently.

Metal Polish, Hardware, and Final Protection

Stainless steel rails, cleats, and rod holders get polished by hand. Aluminum rub rails get their own treatment. Lake Norman's water leaves mineral deposits on metal fittings faster than most freshwater lakes because of the clay sediment runoff from new construction around Denver and Sherrills Ford.

The final step is protection. After all the correction and cleaning, the gel coat needs a barrier against UV, pollen, and water exposure. I offer marine wax lasting 8 to 12 weeks, synthetic sealant lasting four to six months, or Glidecoat Pro ceramic coating lasting two to three years. I have coated over 1,200 boats on this lake. Ceramic requires proper prep — I do an IPA wipe before application to make sure the surface is completely clean. No shortcuts.
